IRWIN CREEK PUBLIC ART CANOPY AND PLAZA
The Irwin Creek Greenway Public Art Project and Plaza sympathetically respond to its natural surroundings by deploying a custom-fabricated, porous canopy featuring 480 suspended glass vessels cast from the cupped hands of community members. This dematerialized overhead structure blends seamlessly into the landscape, preserving unobscured views of the mature trees lining the greenway. Hanging delicately from the canopy, the transparent vessels collect morning dew and falling organic matter, actively coexisting with the environment. The artwork serves as a homage to Charlotte—a city celebrated for its lush tree canopy, urban forests, and expanding greenway networks that connect people to one another and the natural world.
